BOOK BITS BLITZ!!!

Apr. 13th, 2007 12:19 pm Book Review of The Third Times

This book is about The USA Disabled Hockey Festival which helps disabled people, no matter what their disability, play hockey. “The main part of the program is to see the children smile when they leave” says O’Conner. O’Conner was the founder of the festival. Joe Howe, from the Washington Ice Dog’s hockey team likes watching the amputee players play because he feels sorry for anyone that has lost a leg or arm. The Hockey festival helps children of all ages. It helps people who are deaf, blind or have any other disability. I think it really helps people. The festival lasted for four days and had fifty plus games. There’s even a sled league where a person that doesn’t have legs gets in a sled kind of boat and goes for a puck just like normal hockey game. If you want to read more you can read The Third Times.

Apr. 13th, 2007 12:18 pm Book Review of Witch Hunt

I just got done reading a marvelous book. It was very spooky though! The book I read was Witch Hunt… It Happened In Salem Village. This book is written by Stephen Krensky. The illustrations are by James Watling. The book tells the history of witchcraft in Salem Village, Massachusetts. In 1692 people started falling to the ground and started shaking for no apparent reason. Everyone thought it was the work of a witch! Was it? This frightening book gave me the chills. If you like books that are spooky and give you the chills I would definitely recommend this book to you!

Apr. 13th, 2007 12:17 pm Book Review of Shredderman

This past month I read a book called Shredderman by Wendelin Van Draanen. I would recommend this book to any kid that likes funny and exciting books. It is funny because of all the pictures the kid in the book put on the website. It is exciting because he could get in trouble but he does not. It is about a kid who is bullied by a kid named Bubba . So then he takes pictures of Bubba bullying other kids. He does that by hiding a camera in a flap on his back pack. Then he made a web site called shredderman.com that had all the pictures of Bubba being mean to people. That is the book I read the past month.

Apr. 12th, 2007 12:53 pm Book Review of “Brett Favre”

I read a book called “Brett Favre,” written by Sharlene and Ted Nelson. The book is about Brett Favre’s football career. The book isn’t very long, but it gets right to the point. The most interesting part of the book, in my opinion, was the amount of MVP (Most Valuable Player) awards he won in a row. He won the award 3 times!
The book isn’t all about his football career though; it also talks about some crazy things Brett did in his life and some other occurrences in his life. So even if you aren’t especially a football fan, there is still a bit of interesting information about Brett Favre that isn’t football related. I think the book “Brett Favre” is a very interesting book, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about him.

Apr. 12th, 2007 12:42 pm Book Review of “The Maya”

The book I read was called The Maya by Patricia C. McKissack. What I thought was cool was that there are still Mayan people around us today. I learned about this book was that people wore their hair short. This was a sign of a criminal. You might think that the Maya people had a king of all the people, but actually they only had local leaders which formed a ruling class. The book I read was a good book to learn about the Mayan culture and their traditions!

Apr. 11th, 2007 04:36 pm Book review of "Justice For All"

Book Review of "Justice for All"
Justice for all is a book that tells you how Benjamin Franklin gets kidnapped. This book also has three other characters. These three people help each other find Benjamin Franklin. They sailed a crossed the ocean to find him. When they got there they got arrested by order of the King of England. They got put in jail because they wanted to find Benjamin Franklin. When they got to the jail house, they found Benjamin. You are probably wondering why Ben was in jail. Ben was in jail because the King heard that he was getting an army ready. So the King got his men to kidnap him. They got free and went back to Virginia and everyone was happy.

Apr. 11th, 2007 04:34 pm Book Review of “D-Day Landings: The Story of the Allied Invasion”

I read the book “D-Day Landings: The Story of the Allied Invasion”. It was written by Richard Platt. This book is about the D-Day landings in Normandy, France. The book has a lot of interesting facts about D-Day, like the code names for all the beaches. There was Omaha, Sword, Gold, Juno and Utah. The book also tells about the machinery used by the Allies. Tanks called “Funny Tanks” cleared mines and built bridges. The book tells about PLUTO, which stands for pipeline under the ocean. PLUTO supplied the Allied troops with gasoline and oil. This is a magnificent book and I suggest it to anyone interested in learning about World War Two.

Apr. 11th, 2007 04:32 pm Book Review of “The Barn”

The book I read was called “The Barn” by Avi. The book is about three kids whose names are Ben, Nettie, and Harrison and their father in 1855. The father plans to build a barn, but then he gets a “fit of palsy.” Palsy disables you from moving part or all of your body. The children take complete care of the father, including dressing, feeding and bathing him, while at the same time they are building a barn. One morning Ben wakes up early and goes to dress the father and realizes that he has died in his sleep. Ben is especially sad that his father could not see the barn finished. Ben really hoped that his father would get better. In the end Ben had a little peace thinking that his father’s spirit was in the barn.

Apr. 11th, 2007 01:49 pm Book Review of “Amelia Earhart”

Amelia Earhart was a famous pilot. She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She had done many other famous flights with her dare-devilish tricks. She had walked out on plane wings attracting a large crowd. On her last flight she was trying to fly around the world, but her first attempt failed due to a problem with her plane. Once she had fixed her plane, she set out again to try to break the record. On this flight there were problems with her plane again and she ended up crashing. Nobody knows exactly how or where she died. I felt this book did a good job of explaining her life.

Apr. 11th, 2007 01:46 pm Book Review of “Dinosaurs Before Dark”

I read the book “Dinosaurs before Dark.” This book is excellent because it fills your mind with imagination. I think this book is interesting because two ordinary kids find a magical tree house that can take them anywhere. All they have to do is find a book of where they want to go and say, “I wish I could go there.” If I could go anywhere like that, I would go to Florida and visit all my relatives. I liked this book because when Jack is on the Pteranodon, I felt as if I was him, flying and soaring across the blue sky. The wind in my hair and the breeze touching my face as I flew over the Tyrannosaurus Rex. When I was reading this book I was wondering what would happen to Jack. Would the T Rex get Jack or would Jack escape? Thankfully, Annie sent over the Pteranodon to pick up Jack and bring him to the tree house where she was. Near the end of the book, Jack remembered about the medallion. What could the M on the medallion mean? Now to find out the ending you must do one simple thing and one thing only. Read this book. Find out what it feels like to fly on a dinosaur.

Apr. 11th, 2007 01:39 pm Book Review of “Runt”

Runt. What do you think when you hear this word? In the book, “Runt” by Marion Dane Bauer, four normal sized wolf pups were born to Silver and King. Their names are Leader, Thinker, Sniffer, and Runner. There was one more pup but it was really small. There was no other name for him it seemed, but Runt. Runt’s pack thinks that “humans mean death to wolves.” Runt didn’t think that was true. One day Runt was in the forest with his brother, Thinker, and ended up getting porcupine quills in his face. This ended up proving Runt’s father was wrong about humans because they helped Runt. They didn’t kill him. Instead they took the quills out of his face. I thought this book was really dramatic. Two wolves die and at one point in the book I thought Runt was going to get hurt by the moose the pack was hunting. Luckily, Runt was ok. I enjoyed this book and I guarantee you’ll like it to.

Apr. 11th, 2007 01:37 pm Book Review of “Monarch Butterflies”

What settles on a milkweed plant, and gently presses an egg onto one of the leaves? If you haven’t guessed it yet, then it’s a Monarch Butterfly. The size of the Monarch egg is the size of a small dot. When the butterfly lays an egg, she makes it sticky. Wind, rain, or any storm cannot make the egg come off the leaf. In a few, days, the egg hatches. A small caterpillar, also known as a larva, comes crawling out. First, the caterpillar eats the egg shell and then chews on the milkweed leaf. The plant will be the caterpillar’s food. The caterpillar grows and changes. It brakes out of its old skin, showing a new skin underneath. This is called molting. It molts about 5 times. Finally, it is a full grown Monarch caterpillar, bout 2 inches long. The caterpillar goes onto the stem of the leaf. It attaches itself, and drops the head down first. Then the skin splits and falls off. Then a chrysalis forms. Two weeks later, the chrysalis wiggles, and then splits open. Then a butterfly starts to come out. The butterfly will only come out during the day. When fall is coming, the butterfly will have to fly south, if it doesn’t, it will die. They will fly to places like Florida, California, and Mexico. Well, now the butterflies come back here. So we can look at how beautiful they are. I hope you learned something about these fantastic creatures.

Apr. 11th, 2007 01:31 pm Book Review of “Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great”

Have you ever wondered how it would be to have your very own newspaper? In the book “Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great” by Judy Blume, Sheila, the main character, does a lot of interesting things. For example she is scared of dogs so she uses the excuse that she will get hives if she goes near a dog. I thought that this book was a very well written story about a 10 year old girl and what seemed to be almost a true story. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in reading a funny book of a girl that is scared of almost everything!!!

Apr. 11th, 2007 12:25 pm Book Review of “Time Cat”

Have you ever wondered what special powers cats have? The book “Time Cat” by Lloyd Alexander shows you some of cats’ powers like talking and traveling through time. The book is really good. Jason and his cat, Gareth travel through time meeting people like Julius Caesar, St. Patrick Leonardo de Vinci and Sam Adams.
Jason also gets in danger a lot. One time it’s a matter of life and death. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it.

Apr. 11th, 2007 12:20 pm Book Review of “Runny Babbit”

I read a book named Runny Babbit made by Shel Silverstein. It was a funny book because if you say purple hat, he’ll say, “hurple pat.” The words can be confusing because they change the first letter of a word with another. However, it still was a great book! The book is poetry though and there are different poems in the book. You should read this book!

Death Comes to Dinner
By Marvin Miller

How would you like to be a detective? If you think this is going to be cool, than meet Sherwood Hawk. He is the best detective in Fernwell. No matter what the case is Hawk can figure it out. In this book Hawk solves ten mysteries and you get to help. You have to figure out how Hawk cracked the case. Then you get to score yourself. The maximum for each case is ten points. At the end of the book you get to add up all of your points and rank yourself. The top rank is master detective then first class investigator, then amateur sleuth, and the worst you can do is rookie beat policeman. I would recommend this book to any body who likes a challenge or somebody who is just bored and wants something to do. I scored 92 points. Can you beat it?

Apr. 10th, 2007 11:41 am Book Review of “The Edge Chronicles: Over the Edge”

The book I’m reading is called “The Edge Chronicles: Over the Edge” by Paul Stewart. This is a very good book. There are many, many interesting, funny, good parts in this book. Here are some of the parts in the book. I liked when Twig had to leave his home. It really surprised me. It also surprised me when Twigs” “parents” said they weren’t his real parents. This wasn’t one of the longest books I’ve read. It was only 200 something pages long. The longest book I’ve read was 877 pages long. Twig’s dad ended up being a sky pirate who either had to give up his child or die. Twig also got to meet all of his father’s pirate crew. Twig was very excited. Twig had a very hard life. He was about my age- 10 or 11 years old. Twig’s “dad” was asked by Twig’s real dad if he wanted to make a deal for Twig, but he said, “No.” This was one of the best books I’ve ever read so far out of all my books.

Apr. 10th, 2007 10:32 am Book Review of "Pyramids and Mummies"

Have you ever wondered how the pyramids in Egypt were ever built? I read about pyramids. The book is called “Pyramids & Mummies” by Scholastic books. I liked this book because I like history and this book fit into that category. It also made me more aware about building. Today we use cranes, back then they did it by hand. Some pyramids were made over 5,000 years ago! Pyramids were made to hide treasures and dead people. The oldest pyramid in the world is Pharaoh Zoser. This book was very interesting. I bet you will think more about building after you read this book.
